Golf – knowing the basics
Monday, October 6th, 2008Golf has mystified non-golf playing people since ages who simply cannot fathom the interest in the game bordering on obsession which takes hold of golfers. The long-suffering wives of golf-mad husbands are a different story altogether. Ask any wife of a golfer whether Sunday mornings is lazy, lying around-in-bed times and chances are that you will be met with a baleful stare. “What? Are you kidding me? He is away since dawn at the blasted golf club and I will be lucky if I get to see him even for lunch!”- This is probably what that stare means to convey to you!
Golf is actually such an individual game that a golfer can keep playing by himself and become obsessed with improving his handicap. It is basically an outdoor game in which you are supposed to hit a ball into the holes using as minimum strokes as possible. 18 holes comprise 1 round of golf.
The number of hits or “Strokes” needed to hit one hole is termed as ‘par’. Golf is played on beautiful greens wherein there is a teeing area surrounding the hole. This area includes the, a rough sideway, fairway and the green, impeccably-mowed area near the hole. Obstructions are in the form of water, sand traps etc which are termed ‘bunkers’.
Since the golf equipment is heavy consisting as it is of clubs, balls etc. people called ‘caddies’ move around the course with the golfers carrying their equipment. In extra large golf courses, it is not unusual to see golf carts being used to ferry the golfers from one point to the other.
After each individual has hit the ball once, that golfer’s ball which is the furthest from the hole plays first. The team or the person scoring the maximum holes wins the game. You can play it in a team of four or alone. The ‘handicap’ is the term referring to the score determining the proficiency of the players which has an effect on their net scores. This lets players of dissimilar capabilities pit against the other to improve their handicap.
The golf shots are known as bunker shot, tee shot, fairway shot, flop, chip, puts and golf swing. Amongst these the golf swing is considered to be most complex involving faultless synchronization of the full body of the golfer. The swing is also the shot which marks the amateur golfer from the professional.
Golf tournaments for professionals see a high turn-out of enthusiasts to witness the perfect swing. The Las Vegas golf tournament is one of the most- attended tournaments and is also one of the most coveted. In fact, so popular is this that Las Vegas golf tournament packages are offered to golf enthusiasts and participants.
Golf is perceived as the game of the elite since it is an expensive game but has managed to breach the social barrier in recent times. It is not unusual now days to see people from all strata of society playing golf!
